Electric vehicle fires and hydrofluoric acid
An electric vehicle fire can release a number of dangerous substances. The most dangerous is hydrogen fluoride, which forms hydrofluoric acid when it mixes with moisture or water. Hydrofluoric acid is highly corrosive and a powerful contact poison. It penetrates tissue, so poisoning can occur through the skin or eyes, or if inhaled or swallowed. Treatment of these burns includes cleansing the skin or wound with water and applying calcium gluconate gel to neutralise the acid, which is why this kit includes both.
